Bentwood boxes are made from steamed Western red cedar planks. Planks are grooved in three places, steamed, bent at 90-degree angles, and then snugly fitted into a grooved base to create a watertight and seamless structure. Bentwood boxes are unique to Northwest Coast Indigenous cultures and are used for both ceremonial and everyday functions

This bentwood box features a Thunderbird crest by Coast Salish artist and lawyer, Shain Jackson. The Thunderbird possesses the highest spiritual energy and represents the highest levels of power, courage and prestige.
