St. Michael’s Residential School: Lament & Legacy
Dan Rubenstein, Nancy Dyson
Nancy Dyson and Dan Rubenstein's St. Michael’s Residential School: Lament & Legacy recounts the authors’ first-hand experiences as childcare workers at the Alert Bay Student Residence (formerly St. Michael’s Indian Residential School). During their time there, Dyson and Rubenstein witnessed Indigenous children being forcibly removed from their families, punished for speaking their native languages, and subjected to neglect and abuse. They raised these concerns with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, but their warnings went unheeded. In 2015, following the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s reports, the authors felt compelled to share their memories of St. Michael’s to ensure that what went on in the Residential Schools is neither forgotten nor denied.
