This bold Split Raven silk scarf features an original design by the Kwakwaka’wakw artist Ellen Neel and was produced in collaboration with the Neel family. While preparing for the undergraduate student exhibit following the life story, art and legacy of Ḵaḵaso’las-Ellen Neel, the MOA Shop was given permission by the Neel family to use one of Ellen’s designs to produce a limited edition collection of merchandise. The design selected by the family to be used was Ellen’s Split Raven Design.
Partial proceeds from the sale of Split Raven merchandise go toward the endowment fund for the Ellen Neel and Beau Dick Award in Art History, Visual Art & Theory. This award recognizes Indigenous students within the UBC Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory who embody the community spirit exemplified by Ellen Neel and Beau Dick.

Ellen Neel (1916-1966) was a Kwakwaka’wakw carver. In her youth, she began apprenticing with her grandfather, Charlie James, in Alert Bay. Carving totem poles and souvenirs in Vancouver throughout the 1950s, Neel also advocated for Indigenous rights and freedom through the revitalization of traditional carving. Her innovative career as an artist, entrepreneur, and knowledge keeper defines Ellen Neel's legacy of inspiring future women carvers.

Care Instructions:
- First wash, use 1 cup vinegar, 2 teaspoons salt and a full water cycle in the washing machine.
- Dry immediately after washing (leaving item wrinkled or folded when wet may result in image transfer stains. If staining occurs, rewash with a gentle stain remover and tumble dry.)
- Next wash, use phosphate-free detergent and a full water cycle. Wash separately from other laundry for 2-4 washes. Minor shrinkage may occur.
