The design selected by the family to be used was Ellen’s Split Raven Design. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"\u003eThe MOA Shop enlisted the help of Ellen’s grandson, artist Travis Neel, who took his grandmother's design into earrings and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/shop.moa.ubc.ca\/collections\/split-raven-by-ellen-neel-1\/products\/split-raven-pendant\"\u003ependant form\u003c\/a\u003e. The jewellery was produced in North Vancouver. This award recognizes Indigenous students within the UBC Department of Art History, Visual Art \u0026amp; Theory who embody the community spirit exemplified by Ellen Neel and Beau Dick.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e---\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eEllen Neel (1916-1966) was a Kwakw\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003ea\u003c\/span\u003ek\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003ea\u003c\/span\u003e’wakw carver. In her youth, she began apprenticing with her grandfather, Charlie James, in Alert Bay. Carving totem poles and souvenirs in Vancouver throughout the 1950s, Neel also advocated for Indigenous rights and freedom through the revitalization of traditional carving.
