Raven + Frog Argillite Pipe with Inlay
Glen Pollard
This hand-carved black argillite stone pipe by Haida artist, Glen Pollard, features a frog figure facing the lip of the pipe. The frog represents wealth, abundance, ancient wisdom, rebirth, and good luck, while the raven featured on the end of the pipe's bowl symbolizes creation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth.
Glen Pollard was born in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii in 1957. Glen’s lineage can be traced to the K’oona Kiiguwaay of Tanu and his crests are Dogfish and Eagle. A self-taught carver, Glen has worked with argillite for over 30 years. He carves small totem poles, pendants and sculptures and is also well known for his inlay work. His contemporary pieces use clean motifs and are finely executed with elegant form lines. Both Glen’s sister, Shirley Longboat, and brother, Francis Pollard, are also accomplished Haida artists.
