Otomi Embroidered Face Masks
This adult-sized handmade face mask will protect you and the people around you while looking stylish and unique. Otomi hand embroidery is created by the Indigenous Otomi women of central Mexico. Many of the designs feature symbols based on native flora and fauna, local beliefs and even pre-historic cave drawings found in the Hidalgo region.
The Otomi textiles, also known as "tenangos" take weeks to years for the women to embroider. Some say that they may be also inspired by cave paintings in the Mexican Plateau area.
While some of the shapes tend to be more abstract, most of them are based on motifs that can date back to hundreds of years ago. Common motifs are animals, thought to be bearers of important news. Otomi textiles can also feature four- and eight-pointed stars intend to represent the cardinal direction. Other symbols may represent nature, life, fertility, helpful and harmful spirits, or spirits that serve as intermediaries between our world and the afterlife.
