“The circular formation of these killer whales depicts the delicate balance of life. The duality of the whales symbolizes the even distribution of the Salish Sea between animals and people. Equality between these elements will result in a balanced world. The killer whale and the Coast Salish people have both been navigating and sharing this body of saltwater for a very long time.”
Sarah Jim is an emerging artist of mixed WSÍ,KEM (Tseycum), Mexican, Russian and English ancestry. She grew up in WSÁNEĆ Territory (Saanich) on Vancouver Island, BC. She is currently a BFA student at the University of Victoria, and is self-taught in Coast Salish art forms. She draws upon inspiration from the natural world, especially the forests and ocean of her territory. As an artist, she intends to “project optimism” and spread awareness of her deep appreciation to nature.
