Oar Gold + Diamond Pendant
This 14-karat gold pendant, shaped as the base of an oar, features an abstract First Nation design, hand carved by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Carrie Matilpi. The pendant has a diamond-crusted center, with attention directed toward the stunning gemstone through Matipi's well-known, finely detailed Kwakwaka’wakw-and-Cree-influenced formline carving.
Born in Vancouver in 1976, Carrie Matilpi is a Kwakwaka’wakw, Carrier and Cree artist who is well-known for her intricately carved gold and silver jewelry. Raised in the Kwakwaka’wakw community of Alert Bay, BC, she began an apprenticeship with her father, master carver Charles Harper, of the Carrier First Nation at just 19 years old. Matilpi’s work often incorporates both cross-hatching and stippling techniques to accentuate her fine detailing and stippling.
