The featured design of the Mexican Lotería card "El Lowrider" is an expression of cultural identity for the city’s Mexican American community. The roots of lowriding trace all the way back to the 1940s when car culture was beginning to popularize across America. As Mexican Americans began to collectively reimagine their identity from an empowered perspective during the Chicano Movement in the 1970s, lowriders took on a more formalized political function to proudly express their culture in a heavily caucasian-centric America.
