This limited-edition giclée print by Dene artist John Velten features a blue heron standing with outstretched wings looking backwards. The blue heron represents self-reliance and self-determination, focusing on the ability to evolve and progress.

John Velten is a Dene artist from New Westminster, BC. Both his Dene and German Canadian ancestries have heavily influenced his life and work. He spent two years apprenticing with Alano Edzerza followed by a year with Rick Adkins. Today, Velten uses the Northwest Coast formline style to narrate his life and also express his experiences, stories, and emotions through imagery. He works in jewelry design, painting, carving, metal, mixed media, 3D modelling, illustration and animation.

Velten is a full-time artist since 2016 and in 2019, he co-won the MOA Shop Emerging Indigenous Artist Contest with his Hummingbird design. He is now well recognized for his public art, with commissions from The City of Vancouver, Vancouver Mural Festival, Vancouver art community, Lunar Fest and Foundry BC. His work can also be seen at many arts events and galleries around Vancouver.
