Born in 1927, Stó:lō artist Rena Point Bolton began to learn the ancient art of weaving baskets and blankets from her grandmother when she was just three years old. The discipline and dedication required to learn these techniques helped Rena carry on her people’s traditions during her early life, a time when many First Nations cultural activities were prohibited. Dedicated to strengthening the ancient art of Salish basketry, Rena began teaching cedar bark weaving in 1985.

Rena’s works are recognized internationally and are permanently displayed in the Canadian Museum of History and in the Honolulu Museum of Fine Arts. Her works can also be found in public and private collections worldwide. In collaboration with Richard Daly, she has chronicled her life story in the book Xwelíqwiya: The Life of a Stó:lō Matriarch.
