"Mousewoman" Northwest Coast Puppet
Morgan Asoyuf
The tiny but mighty Mousewoman is a legendary figure in the oral and visual practices of Northwest Coast Indigenous cultures. She is both grandmother and oracle, able to travel in and out of the spirit world. Mousewoman sits on young people’s shoulders in crucial times, whispering advice and knowledge. She takes the shape of a mouse and Grandmother to provide guidance, caring for all youth and guiding them in positive directions.
Designed by Tsimshian artist and MOA Shop featured artist, Morgan Asoyuf, this Mousewoman hand puppet helps provide a visual aspect to Morgan's book, Learning My Rights with Mousewoman. The story, which can be read alongside Mousewoman, is meant "to empower children to understand what their rights are and create abuse prevention".
Throughout her artistic career, Morgan Asoyuf has apprenticed with Haida artist Richard Adkins, and Tsm’syen artist Henry Green and studied under German goldsmith Gerold Mueller at the Vancouver Metal Art School. She works in jewellery design, carving, illustration and fashion, and she is driven to pursue the art form as both a purist and lover of experimental technique.
