About the Artist:

Nunuusxli, Chazz Mack is a Nuxalk and Heiltsuk artist from the Raven, Grizzly and Sisiutl (double-headed sea serpent) clans. Born and raised in Q’Umquots (Bella Coola) he has been carving and creating art since he was a child. He learned a lot by watching his father, Joe Mack carve and describes himself as being “surrounded” by art and artists his entire life. Mack graduated from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art and later taught at the Acwsalcta School (Nuxalk Acwsalcmalslayc Academy of Learning). Mack’s work “blends traditional and contemporary elements” and is inspired by the natural world. His work is engaging and has a sense of youthfulness and fluidity to it. He is an acomplished painter and carver, mainly in alder and cedar, and more recently a jewellery maker. Mack also assisted in the carving of two significant community totem poles. Appropriately, his Nuxalk name Nunuusxli means “Is a fast learner” or “likes to learn things.
