About the Artist:

Yaw, Ints lha Lxakmlayc, Carmen Hans, is a Nuxalk and Shushwap artist from Q’umk’uts (Bella Coola). Her Nuxalk name, Yaw, Ints lha Lxakmlayc means the one who keeps the beat. Hans began cedar weaving around 2010 with a goal of helping bring the skill back to the Nuxalk community. At first she focused on recreating traditional cedar regalia and later branched out exploring different styles and weaving techniques, followed by a journey into jewellery weaving. According to Hans, “We lost the art of Cedar Weaving for many years. Once the opportunity to learn came to me I took it, which has now turned into the best medicines”. She works primarily with cedar, but also experiments with hand spun Merino wool. Hans is dedicated to revitalizing the Nuxalk culture and language within her community.
