The raven crest is historically credited with releasing the Sun, Moon and Stars into our world. He carries the power of the unknown and is the guardian of magic, seeker of answers and the messenger. Born in Vancouver in 1976, Carrie Matilpi is a Kwakwaka’wakw, Carrier and Cree artist who is well-known for her intricately carved gold and silver jewelry. Raised in the Kwakwaka’wakw community of Alert Bay, BC, she began an apprenticeship with her father, master carver Charles Harper, of the Carrier First Nation at just 19 years old. Matilpi’s work often incorporates both cross-hatching and stippling techniques to accentuate her fine detailing and stippling.
