This yellow cedar talking stick is hand-carved by renowned Squamish artist Jim Yelton. It features two carved figures, Wolf and Beaver, with one feather engraving between them and another on the handle. Wolf embodies the qualities of loyalty and devotion and symbolizes strength, endurance, fidelity, generosity, pathfinding and pride. Beaver represents creativity, determination and artistic ability.

Talking sticks are used by many Northwest Coast First Nations' cultures during important gatherings and meetings. Whoever holds the talking stick has the right to speak freely and without interruption, until they pass it on to the next speaker. In this manner, talking sticks ensure freedom of expression and instill respect for listening to the viewpoints of others.

Jim Yelton was born in Squamish, BC in 1955. He was taught to carve by his father, Michael Yelton, who stressed the importance of cultural traditions and their significance within this artform. Yelton has been carving cedar for over 30 years. He specializes in masks, feast dishes, canoe paddles and talking sticks. Jim’s work is featured in galleries and private collections worldwide. He currently resides in Sechelt, BC.
