Bentwood boxes are made from steamed Western red cedar planks. Planks are grooved in three places, steamed, bent at 90-degree angles, and then snugly fitted into a grooved base to create a watertight and seamless structure. Bentwood boxes are unique to Northwest Coast Indigenous cultures and are used for both ceremonial and everyday functions.
This box features a Hummingbird crest by Coast Salish artist and lawyer Shain Jackson. Hummingbirds are known as nurturers who naturally soothe and heal. They are symbols of love, beauty and compassion.
Shain Jackson is a Coast Salish artist and lawyer from the First Nation community of Sechelt. As a lawyer he has represented the interests of Indigenous communities and organizations throughout B.C. After years devoted to the legal profession, Jackson has taken a break to follow his passion as an artist. Currently, he is the founder and president of Spirit Works, an Indigenous-owned and operated company focused on the design, production and distribution of Indigenous artwork.
