This handcarved talking stick by Alfred Robertson (Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw) features Thunderbird, Raven and Killer Whale. Talking sticks are used by many Northwest Coast First Nations' cultures during important gatherings and/or meetings. Whoever holds the talking stick has the right to speak freely and without interruption, until they pass the stick on to the next speaker. In this manner, talking sticks ensure freedom of expression and instill respect for listening to the viewpoints of others.

Thunderbird is one of the most powerful spirits. It is a giant supernatural being responsible for thunder and lighting. Thunderbird represents great power, courage and respect, as well as leadership with integrity and compassion. Raven is one of the most important figures in Northwest Coast artwork. The Raven is known as a trickster, the bringer of light and represents creation and knowledge. The Killer Whale, or Orca, is a symbol of strength, family, dignity and prosperity. It is believed to be the reincarnation of chiefs.

Born in 1950 in Kingcome Inlet, British Columbia, Alfred Robertson now resides in Nanaimo. He was taught to carve by his father, William Robertson, and has also worked alongside his brother, Sampson Robertson. Robertson carves full-time, and works primarily in red and yellow cedar. In his spare time, he teaches basic carving techniques to elementary school children, preserving and sharing the traditions of his people. His daughter, Sarah Robertson, is also a carver.
