About the Artist:

Nusmata, Jarrod Saunders, (b.1982) is a Nuxalk artist from Q’umk’uts (Bella Coola). Honoring their familial legacy and artistic lineage his grandfather, Silyas Saunders, bestowed the Nuxalk name Nusmata on him, translating to ‘Sacred Longhouse’ with a meaning similar to ‘Heaven’. He is a third generation artist and began drawing and carving in 1997. He later trained with master carvers, Silyas Saunders, Skip Saunders, Doug Horne and Doug LaFortune. His work is deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of his heritage, but he also embraces innovation alongside tradition so he has diversified his creative pursuits to include graphic design, clothing and giclée prints. Saunders’ work seamlessly blends traditional motifs with contemporary elements, creating artworks that resonate with both the past and the present. His work often features bold colours, intricate patterns and traditional themes with a dedication to preserving and evolving his cultural traditions. Through his innovative approaches he aims to make Indigenous art more accessible to a wider audience.
