Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1959, Ojibway artist Donna Salo was encouraged by her cousin Audrey Deroy to begin creating fur-trimmed smoke tanned hats, hide moccasins and pine needle baskets. Donna enjoys creating her pine needle baskets using traditional methods, beginning with the laborious task of picking and cleaning the pine needles, soaking them and then weaving them into baskets with sinew. Many of her hide pieces, such as this pipe bag, also incorporate exquisite beadwork. Donna currently resides in Kamloops, BC with her husband and children.
