Squamish artist, Jacob B. Lewis, is internationally renowned for his complex and colourful designs that bring together traditional and contemporary forms. His elaborate pieces feature hidden crest figures, creating multi-layer stories within each piece. 

He has been carving since the age of seven and became prolific in his 20's. He transforms the cedar he is carving into unique and modern works of art. This hand-carved piece titled Birds Surrounding the Sun features abalone inlay and the rich colour scheme he is known for. 

Jacob B. Lewis was born in 1955 in Squamish, British Columbia, and he is a member of the Squamish Nation. He began his carving journey at the age of seven and started his artistic career at the age of nineteen. He has studied art at Capilano University in North Vancouver for several years. Lewis is well known for his elaborate and colourful designs. He carves cedar masks, plaques, and miniature totem poles, and he has also worked with ceramic bowls and vases. He currently resides in Squamish.
