Thunderbird Totem
Tom Williams
This beautiful mounted carving features Thunderbird with Killer Whale. Thunderbird is one of the most powerful spirits. It is a giant supernatural being responsible for thunder and lighting. Thunderbird represents great power, courage and respect, as well as leadership with integrity and compassion.
Tom Williams is a wood carver from the Squamish Nation. He began carving at the age of 12 and is largely a self-taught artist. Tom’s carving style reflects influences from his uncle, Jim Paull, and father-in-law, Master Carver Chief Floyd Joseph who offered Tom direction and inspiration in his carving career.
Tom carves plaques, paddles, rattles and masks in the Coast Salish tradition. He works with both red and yellow cedar and is well known for his attention to detail and deep carving style. Tom began teaching his son, Lincoln Williams, at an early age and has inspired him to also become a carver.
