This thin, silver cuff bracelet was engraved by Ojibway artist, Joe Descoteaux, with a hand-carving technique. The piece features a killer whale facing a carefully designed salmon. Each animal has a deep meaning and representation in Northwest Coast art, which can also reveal the family crests of the artist. 

Killer Whale (orca) represents strength, dignity and prosperity. It’s believed to be the reincarnation of chiefs and represents transformation and communication with family. 

Salmon represents abundance, fertility, prosperity and renewal. 

Joe Descoteaux is an Ojibway artist who was born in Ontario in 1964 and moved to the West Coast at a young age. With permission to carve in the Kwakwaka’wakw style, he began working under the guidance of his wife Cheryl Wadhams, Don Dawson and Lloyd Wadhams Jr. Through his works, Joe reveals and revives the origins and oral histories of the Kwakwaka’wakw peopleHis pieces, typically in silver and gold, are highly sought after for their precision and attention to detail.
