Raven Mini Jute Bag
Bold and practical, this black and white mini jute bag by artist Kelly Robinson showcases a raven design in contemporary fashion. Crafted from a sturdy jute material, its compact size makes it the perfect bag for quick errands or carrying everyday essentials.
Jute is the second most important vegetable fiber after cotton. It is a eco-friendly alternative to all other synthetic bags due to it's biodegradable nature. This is why young trees for planting are wrapped in Jute and inserted directly into soil. It is non-toxic and decomposes swiftly back into soil.
About the Artist:
Kelly Robinson, born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, has roots and family in Bella Coola, BC, with ties to both Nuxalk and Nuu-chah-nulth nations. Exposed to First Nations artwork from an early age, he developed a passion for the unique design elements of Nuxalk artistry. His artistic journey began under the mentorship of Nuxalk artist Alvin Mack, and in 1997, he began painting and exploring Northwest Coast aesthetics. Over time, he became known for his carvings and jewellery, later expanded into other mediums such as bentwood boxes.
He refined his skills through formal education, graduating from the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program at Vancouver’s Native Education College in 2010 and later from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art in 2012. He also apprenticed under Haida jeweler James McGuire and participated in a mentorship program with Tim Paul, where he deepened his knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth storytelling and mask-making.
Kelly’s contributions to Indigenous art in British Columbia have earned him significant recognition, including the YVR Art Foundation Mid-Career Artist Scholarship in 2019 and the BC Achievement Fulmer Award in First Nations Art in 2020. His work is celebrated for its innovative approach, blending traditional Nuxalk design with contemporary techniques, such as reversing positive and negative space to create striking compositions.
