This yellow cedar talking stick featuring Thunderbird is hand-carved by celebrated Squamish artist Jim Yelton. Thunderbird is one of the most powerful spirits. It is a giant supernatural being responsible for thunder and lighting. Thunderbird represents great power, courage and respect, as well as leadership with integrity and compassion.

Talking sticks are used by many Northwest Coast First Nations' cultures during important gatherings and/or meetings. Whoever holds the talking stick has the right to speak freely and without interruption, until they pass the stick on to the next speaker. In this manner, talking sticks ensure freedom of expression and instill respect for listening to the viewpoints of others.

Jim Yelton was born in Squamish, BC in 1955. He learned to carve from his father, Michael Yelton, who stressed the importance of cultural traditions and their significance within this art form. Jim has been carving cedar for over 30 years. He specializes in masks, feast dishes, canoe paddles and talking sticks. Jim’s work is featured in galleries and private collections worldwide. He currently resides in Sechelt, British Columbia.
