Featured in the Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots exhibition at MOA, Michèle Bygodt's work depicts six Black subjects, each a part of her own series, "Bia Atôbe (We Are)".

"Sankofa" is the idea of moving forward while reaching back to connect to one’s heritage. It is the notion that taking pride in heritage helps us to move into the future. Sankofa comes from the Ghanaian Akan language, and the word and its essence have been adopted by many African and Black people around the globe as an expression of cultural and political affirmation.

Born in Libreville, Gabon, Michèle Bygodt’s interest in photography began as a teenager when her father’s work led her to live in 5 different countries, in both Africa and Europe. Living in a multicultural environment, and later on, moving from one country to another ignited her interest in travel photography, cultural diversity, differences and similarities. She graduated with a BA in graphic design and sciences in Paris before deciding to move to Vancouver in 2016 to pursue photography. After attending the Emily Carr University of Art+Design, she graduated with a BFA in 2019. During her studies, she was also a nominee for the 2018 Lind Prize.
