This exquisite mask by Coast Salish artist Perry LaFortune is hand-carved from yellow cedar and finished with acrylic paint. The Eagle symbolizes great strength, leadership and prestige. Its feathers provide good luck to both giver and receiver and are a sign of friendship.

Born in Duncan, BC, in 1962, Perry LaFortune is from the Tsawout First Nation in Saanich, BC. Perry began carving in 1976 and was influenced by his Elders, as well as his family of talented carvers. He apprenticed with his brother Francis Horne and was also privileged to have worked with master carver Simon Charlie.

In his carving career, Perry has worked on many notable projects, including: assisting his brother Francis in 1986 to carve four totem poles for the city of Duncan; a dignitary trip in 1988 to Singapore; head carver in 2007 for a Tsawout Community Canoe Carving Project creating a traditional Salish canoe; in 2008 he was commissioned to carve a talking stick to be presented to Bill Clinton; and in 2018 he carved a 7m totem pole with his brother Tom for the BC Ministry of Health.
